It is a
user friendly website and mailing list used as a forum exclusively by Mac@LehighValley members
who want to connect and share.
The
website stores items of interest for members while the mailing list permits
users to send items of interest to each other. Participation is optional and one must join to participate. Here are a few ideas of items to share:
What are the advantages of
joining the Mac@LehighValley Yahoo!Group?
1) Messages: Mac@LehighValley Yahoo!Group members can send messages
to other members of the Mac@LehighValley Yahoo!Group. If a member doesn't want to get email, they
may elect when they join to not get email, but then must go to the Mac@LehighValley
Yahoo!Group webpage and log in to read the messages.
2) Files: Yahoo!Group members can post files to the group site. Other members can go there to look at
them and download them. At this
point in time, most files are administrative in nature.
3) Photos: Yahoo!Group members can post photos on
the group site. Other members can
then go there and look at the photos and download them. As an example, there is a set of screen shots of the
iPod Touch with the latest software update that added Mail, Stocks, Maps,
Weather, and Notes. There are also
screen shots of each application including the original applications: Safari,
Calendar, Contacts, YouTube, Clock, and Calculator.
4) Links: Yahoo!Group members can
share links. The present links are
to the Mac@LehighValley website, Apples Lehigh Valley Store, and a set of links for
iPhone, iPod Touch, and other handheld devices.
5) Database: Database can hold can hold things such
as Phonebooks, and any other structured list. The present Yahoo!Group Databases are a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions), and lists of software members use and of equipment they use. The lists are so that people that use the same software or equipment may help eachother.
6) Members: This is a list of those people who have
joined the Mac@LehighValley Yahoo!Group. It
is cryptic, giving their Yahoo! ID and if they elect, their name. It also offers a way to send private
messages to another member without them having to reveal their email address.
7) Calendar: This calendar lists all Mac@LehighValley
meetings, but can include other events that members want to add.
After you click on "Join This
Group," click on "Forget your ID or password?" It will ask you to enter your
Yahoo!ID. Under this block
is place to click on "I don't know my Yahoo!ID." It will give you a couple procedures to
find your Yahoo!ID.
I have a Yahoo!ID, but how do I find the password?
After you click on "Join This
Group," click on "Forget your ID or password?" It will give you a temporary password
that you change to a more appropriate password.
I went to join or actually did join, but I was confused
as to the options. What do
Individual Email, Daily Digest, Fully Featured, and Traditional mean?
Yahoo! actually explains these. The preferred settings are
Individual Email and Fully Featured.
However, if you want less email, select Daily Digest. If you are having trouble reading your
email messages, change to Traditional and see if things work better.
I have blocked email from strangers to block spam. Can I still participate?
Yes. You have three choices after you join:
Go to the group page and look under members and enable email from each of the members.
Go to the group page and click on edit membership. Change Step 2 to Daily Digest. Then go back to your email filter and enable email from Mac@LehighValley@yahoogroups.com Now you will get the messages emailed to you once each day.
OK, I joined the Mac@LehighValley Yahoo!Group. How do I find out if it is working?
Log in and send a message
introducing yourself. This will go
out to all members including you.
If you don't get a copy, you need to login and click on "Edit
Membership." There you will
find out where your messages are sent and you can correct it if necessary.
Just about anything you can
imagine. I belong to groups about
Rotary International, Volvo cars, Boy Scouts, photography, rhododendrons,
azaleas, Reading Works (Western Electric), and deer problems. There is a searchable list at http://groups.yahoo.com .
I read a message and I want to reply to it. How do I do that?
There are two ways to reply: 1) to
the entire group and 2) just to the sender.
If you are in "Fully Featured
mode", just click on the appropriate link directly following the
message: 1) "Reply to
Group" or 2) "Reply to Sender". If you are
using "Traditional" mode it is more difficult. Just be sure to reply to the group is
addressed to "Mac@LehighValley@yahoogroups.com". To reply to the sender make sure the reply is addressed to
the sender if they show their email address. Other wise you can log in to the Mac@LehighValley Yahoo!Group website and look under members
and click on their name to send them an email even if they keep their email
private.
